Strategically and economically, the Sultanate of Oman appears to be one of the world's newer nations, as a result of its planned growth and vigour and character of its people.

In fact, it is one of the oldest civilizations. For centuries, this magnificent land which straddles the trade routes between East and West, served as a link between Arabia and Africa, and India as well. Omani sailors were known the world over, and renowned for their skill, courage and endurance.

The accession of H.M. Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1970 ushered in an unprecedented era of progress and prosperity. Under his pragmatic leadership, the Sultanate of Oman has developed into a modern state that provides generous benefits to its people, coupled with steady economic growth. Its mercantile links with the rest of the world have been enhanced, and commerce flourishes.

PROMINENT INDIAN BUSINESSMAN -KANAKSINH KHIMJI- MUSCAT OMAN

Prominent Indian Businessman Kanak Khimji who is the only NRI from the entire Middle East to get the first Pravasi Bharathiya Puraskar from the Government of India during the Pravasi day celebrations in New Delhi. According to sources, the Indian Embassy had proposed a list of prominent NRIs to be considered for the much coveted award. It is a typical Indian mentality that when someone gets an award or recognition, others would also like to get the same. According to sources, the award this year was given only to People of Indian origin and not to any Non Resident Indians. That explains why two prominent Malayali businessmen in Gulf did not get the award. " Malayalis are the largest NRI community in the Gulf, why our people are not given award," asked none other than the Kerala chief Minister A.K.Antony. The final selection was done by a special committee under the Vice President.

It all began over a century ago when Ramdas Thackersey set sail from the coastal town of Mandvi in Kutch, on India's western coast. He was succeeded by his son Khimji Ramdas, who sowed seeds that eventually grew into a global enterprise that was named after him.

The baton of entrepreneurship was passed on to his sons, Gokaldas Khimji and Mathradas Khimji.
